Schools
Children and adolescents experience great physical, psychological and
social development during the school years. To ensure that this
development occurs normally, children and adolescents must balance
their consumption of energy and particular nutrients with movement and
physical activity.
Overweight and obesity is a serious medical condition, which
is associated with a wide range of debilitating and life threatening
conditions. Over the last 20 years, rates of obesity in children have
risen greatly in many countries around the world. We now have a
situation in Australia where one in four children are overweight or
obese.
Implementation of The Fresh Tastes NSW
Healthy School Canteen Strategy guidelines is now mandatory for NSW
Government schools (from term 1, 2005) and they are also strongly
supported and endorsed by the Catholic and Independent Education
Sectors. These guidelines ensure a healthy school canteen service for
students and staff in NSW schools.
Nutrition Lab has
worked with a Number of schools, both primary and secondary to review
their canteen menus and incorporate the principles of healthy eating
into their canteens to comply with these guidelines. We also believe a
healthy school should endeavour to model the positive nutrition
messages in all aspects of the curriculum, and our dietitians are
experienced in providing additional services to your school including:
- Nutrition presentations to students
- Nutrition presentations to staff and parents
- Hands-on workshops for parents
- Supermarket tours for parents
- Health Curriculum review
